Lawn Mowing Best Practices

At a glance mowing the lawn can look pretty straight forward, however if done incorrectly it can cause several issues. Things like color, soil moisture, weeds, among others, can be affected by how the way the grass is cut. With the goal to help cut through the confusion, we made a short list of best practices for lawn mowing.

Mower Deck Height

For most people, setting the height of your mower is a no-brainer: set the deck to the height you want your grass! But there’s a little more to it than that- cutting your lawn too short or too high can cause very noticeable problems.

Depending on the season, your mower can be cutting as low as 2.5” tall safely. That said, during the hot Summer months mowing closer to 3.5” is recommended to avoid drying out the turf.

Looking Thirsty?

If so, avoid cutting the grass until the lawn is hydrated to prevent stressing the plant. During periods of intense heat or lack of water, lawns can get stressed-out and turn to an ugly color easily. Be sure to provide adequate amounts of water each week to avoid this problem.

Cut vs. Tear

Are you cutting or tearing your grass? Dull mower blades can wreak havoc on lawns by tearing leaves and leaving jagged wounds. This forces the lawn to put more energy into healing uneven broken blades of grass instead of bouncing back in strength.

Keep your blades sharp and if you start to notice broken blades of grass or fuzzy tips on the grass, than it’s time to re-sharpen. A good sharp blade will also make the mowing experience more pleasurable and quicker.
