Benefits of Mulching
When mulch is applied around shrubs, trees and throughout planting beds, both plants and soil benefit from this in a variety of ways.
Right from the start mulch provides a layer of insulation that helps protect tree and shrub roots from temperature extremes. During the summer it helps cool and retain moisture in the soil surrounding the roots, and during the winter months reduces the amount of freezing and thawing within the soil below the mulch.
It also prevents weeds from growing. That, you may already know, however did you know that this also means less competition for your prized plants? With less weeds, your shrubs and trees do not have to share valuable resources, like water, with undesirable weeds.
A good mulch will also improve the soils fertility and physical structure. It will add rich organic matter to the top of tough clay-based soils and supplies a suitable environment for important organisms within the soil.
Hold on, there’s more… mulched beds also help protect plants from lawn equipment and it adds a natural aesthetic to a landscape.
As you can see, the benefits of adding some mulch to your planting beds are pretty great. We may have missed a few other perks to mulch, so let us know in the comments if you know of any.
